SUMMARY:September PS! Book Club: The Lying Game
DESCRIPTION:Join the PS! Book Club virtually on September 16th at 7:00 p.m. when we discuss The Lying Game by Ruth Ware. This atmospheric\, twisty tale\, with just the right amount of chill will keep you wrong-footed—which has now become Ruth Ware’s signature style.   \nFour women\, once inseparable friends at Salten\, a second-rate boarding school set near the cliffs of the English Channel\, realize that their shared past may not stay safely buried. The four were notorious for playing the Lying Game\, telling lies at every opportunity that were disturbing enough to ensure that everyone steered clear of them. But their little game had consequences\, and the girls were all expelled in their final year of school under mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of the school’s eccentric art teacher\, Ambrose. \nMystery & Thriller\, 384 pgs. Published 2018  \nRuth Ware is a British bestselling author and novelist. She is famous for her psychological crime thrillers\, most popular of which include Dark Wood (2015)\, The Woman in Cabin 10 (2016)\, The Lying Game (2017)\, and The Death of Mrs. Westaway (2018).  \nBorn Ruth Warburton in 1977\, her writing style is often compared to Agatha Christie. Her heroes are usually ordinary women who find themselves in dangerous situations where crime is involved.  \nPS! Book Club: The Lying Game

SUMMARY:Movie Night: Cabrini
DESCRIPTION:Join Movie Night on Friday September 13th at 7:00 p.m. for Cabrini\, a film from award-winning director Alejandro Monteverde.  This powerful epic tells of Maria Francesca Cabrini\, an Italian nun and immigrant who arrives in New York City in 1889 as a missionary to New York City’s Italian population and is greeted by disease\, crime\, and impoverished children.   \nMother Cabrini sets off on a daring mission to convince the hostile mayor to secure housing and healthcare for society’s most vulnerable. With broken English and poor health\, Cabrini builds an empire of hope unlike anything the world had ever seen. SUMMARY:Pop-Up Bike Ride and Paw Paw Collection
DESCRIPTION:If you missed last week's Paw Paw Walk\, here is another chance to collect these once-a-year treats!  Join Jon Wolz on Thursday September 12th at 10:00 am with your bike and a paw paw collection bag. Take a bike ride along the north C&O Canal from Whites Ferry (m 35.5) to Lock 26 (m 39.4)\, with stops to collect ripe paw paws. We will bike from White's Ferry to lock 26 which is a distance of four miles. On the way back down the towpath we will stop at different places that have paw paw trees to gather paw paws. We will gather paw paws until we have reached our limit.  Round trip is eight miles. Allow for 2 1/2 hours. Bring a bag to carry paw paws and a bike basket will be useful for holding the bag. Wear long pants.  \nMeet in the White's Ferry parking lot and we will bike from Whites Ferry along the C&O Tow Path in search of this succulent fruit nicknamed the "poor man's banana". We'll learn how to find and collect these treats and hear about some of the ways you can use them.  \nParticipants need to register on poolesvilleseniors.org prior to the walk. If you need to cancel\, please email info@poolesvilleseniors.org. The registration is limited to 15 participants.  \nSince 1970\, Jon Wolz\, the leader of our "pop-up" walks and our local expert on the C&O Canal\, has had a long history with the canal. Since 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). His two levels encompass the area from White's Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct.    \n  \nPop Up Bike Ride and Paw Paw Collection\n \nPaw Paw Pop-Up Walk: White’s Ferry Walk Registration

After returning to White’s Ferry\, join the group for a social get-together over your own lunch or one purchased at the locally renown White’s Ferry Grill.     \nWear appropriate clothing (long pants) and proper footwear for walking through the underbrush since the trees are located close to but off the path. Proceed about 2 miles out of Dickerson and passing into Frederick County. The parking lot is at the bottom of the hill before the Monocacy River bridge on the right side of the road.  It is easy to miss if you are going too fast.  The sharp right turn into the parking lot is BEFORE you get to the bridge. There is a sign … “Monocacy Natural Resources Management Area.” If you miss the turn\, go across the bridge and turn around at Park Mill Road that is just past the bridge. There is plenty of parking at the trailhead. \nKaren Dansby was born and raised in Arlington\, VA. She spent 20+ years in eastern Kentucky\, then retired to Sedona\, AZ. SUMMARY:Fighting For Our Lives Documentary Movie: United Farm Workers Movement
DESCRIPTION:Join Susan Due Pearcy on Thursday\, August 29th at 7 p.m. in Speer Hall for a free presentation of “Fighting for our Lives”\, her husband’s Oscar-nominated film. The documentary\, produced and directed by Glen Pearcy\, was created while the Pearcys were volunteers with the United Farmworkers Union at the headquarters in LaPaz\, CA.  The film documents the California grape strike from Coachella to Fresno\, CA\, as the farmworkers fought to negotiate a union contract in 1973. The film also depicts their non-violent struggle in the face of threats from the police\, growers and hired goons. The film is about an hour long.  \nSusan will share some mementos from that time and some of the graphic art she produced for the UFW newspaper\, El Malcriado\, and she will entertain questions.  \nLocation: Speer Hall\, 17800 Elgin Rd. (109)  \nBIO:  \nSusan Pearcy   \nIn 1972\, Susan Due Pearcy and her husband Glen\, moved to California to join Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers supporting the civil rights struggle of the farm workers. Glen was staff photographer at the UFW newspaper\, El Malcriado\,  and Susan was the artist who created a series of fine art pieces (linocuts/woodcuts) depicting farmworkers and their movement.   \nGlen Pearcy was an accomplished filmmaker known for his work in social justice\, labor rights\, and progressive politics. In April 1972 he joined the UFW newspaper\, El Malcriado\, as staff photographer.  \nFilmmaker and Director:  \nGlen Pearcy directed the documentary “Fighting for Our Lives” (1975)\, which focused on the struggles of the United Farm Workers Movement against police brutality.  \nHe also worked on “On Company Business” (1980)\, although uncredited as a director.  \nHis commitment to social causes shines through his films.  \nCinematographer:  \nPearcy contributed as a cinematographer for the documentary “Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism” (2004) and the TV series “Trains Unlimited” (1997).
