DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Kunzang Palyul Chöling (KPC) Buddhist Temple on October 29th  at 10:00 a.m. for an outing and social at the Peace Park and Gardens.  \nIf you’ve ever driven by the Buddhist Temple on River Road and wondered what it was about\, now is your chance to visit! This tour of the grounds\, prayer room\, and 3 miles of hiking trails is right in our backyard. Visit consecrated Stupas (sacred monuments to Buddha)\, see the goats\, pigs and chickens\, marvel at the large gardens\, new koi pond\, and have quiet contemplation in the beautiful prayer room. There are picnic tables if you want to bring lunch or a snack and socialize. A most peaceful place to see.  \n\nMasks (N95\, KN95 or KN94) are required in the prayer room (provided) or bring your own. \nHiking sticks may be helpful on trails. \nHikes can be as short or as long as you desire. \nThere is plenty of parking \n The trails are not suitable for walkers or wheelchairs\, but the rest of the grounds are fine. Restrooms on site. \nRain date November 16th. \n\nLocation: KPC Buddhist Temple\, 18400 River Road\, Poolesville  \nKunzang Odsal Palyul Changchub Chöling (KPC) — “Glorious Dharma Continent of Absolute Clear Light” — is a hub of compassionate activity with a mission to inspire people to improve the world and end suffering for the benefit of all beings.  \nThe grounds surrounding the KPC Temple and Peace Park are open to the public. Visitors are welcome to visit the seven-acre grounds and 65-acre Peace Park—which contains walking trails\, stupas (ancient forms of Buddhist architecture considered to embody the enlightened mind)\, prayer wheels and meditation benches—during daylight hours. SUMMARY:History of Ferries and the C&O Canal and Their Impacts on Montgomery County’s Social and Economic Development
DESCRIPTION:Join Ralph Buglass on Zoom Thursday October 10 at 7 p.m. Ralph will enlighten us about the History of Ferries and the C&O Canal\, and Their Impacts on Montgomery County’s Social and Economic Development. Many people have used White’s Ferry to cross the Potomac River\, or as a starting point for hiking on the C&O Canal. But it is a fair bet that far fewer residents know the history of ferries along the Montgomery County segment of the Potomac and the C&O Canal\, including White’s Ferry\, and the role they played in the evolution and growth of Montgomery County.  \nThe presentation is based on extensive research spearheaded by Ralph Buglass and supported by numerous local history researchers and experts including William Bauman\, Jim Poole\, Jon Wolz\, Rod Mackler\, Mary Ann Kephart\, Link Hoewing\, and Charles Jacobs.  This is the same presentation Ralph recently delivered on July 17th at Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church.  He will also review the information discussed in the forum at that event. If you missed that presentation\, this is your chance to experience it! \nPresenter: \nRalph Buglass is a retired communications professional\, Montgomery County native\, and graduate of Winston Churchill High School. He earned a BA in American history from Cornell University and an MA in journalism from American University. Ralph has been a volunteer docent at the restored one-room Kingsley Schoolhouse in Clarksburg\, an experience that sparked a deep interest in the early days of public education in Montgomery County.  He was the 2014 recipient of a national service award from the Country Schoolhouse Association of America for his volunteer work.    \nRalph is a frequent speaker for Montgomery History on a variety of local history topics and a volunteer researcher for Peerless Rockville\, the nonprofit historic preservation organization for Montgomery County’s seat of government. In 2020\, with Peerless Rockville\, he co-authored Images of America: Rockville\, a pictorial history of the city’s 250 years.
